German waste plastics market: No light at the end of the tunnel

Many parts of Germany’s waste plastics market continue to face very lacklustre demand. Demand for good-quality natural grades remained decent in October, but also saw price cuts, market insiders told EUWID. Recyclers often lowered their purchase prices for post-consumer and post-industrial plastic scrap. However, their attempts to pass higher energy costs on to their customers have largely gone nowhere. A few recyclers idled processing lines or curbed output due to a lack of demand and hefty energy costs. Converters themselves still seem to have full inventories in the off-season, which is now getting underway.

Production was down in key sales markets, such as the construction and automotive industries, because of the economic downturn. With primary polymer prices having taken a big tumble in recent months, a few converters and brand companies also decided to switch from recycled plastic to cheaper virgin material for products where sustainability is not a key selling point....
