The German waste plastics market was very calm in April, according to some market participants. The only cause for worries was the tense logistics situation around the Easter holidays. In some cases, deliveries had to be postponed due to a lack of lorry drivers. The market outlook remains unchanged, in part because converters are expected to take longer holiday downtimes during the summer months.
The situation remains difficult for plastics recyclers: Although there is sometimes improved demand for recycled plastics from various industry sectors, recycling companies continue to struggle to remain profitable and have to contend with price pressure from primary plastics.
The infrastructure investment package planned by the new German government could boost the consumption of recycled plastics in the construction sector in the future, but the market will remain difficult in the short to medium-term, EUWID was told. In addition, there are the uncertainties associated with the global market, such as international tariff policies and the geopolitical situation. Recycling firms must continue to adapt to these conditions and optimise production in order to remain competitive.
