The German waste textiles industry is ready to close out 2024, an exceedingly bad and crisis-ridden year. The dire state of the market is illustrated by recyclers' remarks. It had been "worse than bad" and "a complete disaster", said market participants.
And there are no signs that the situation would improve next year. In fact, some insiders are predicting a prolonged crisis. Some are concerned that the recent insolvencies in the industry, which include the Soex group, might not be the last.
Collection and sorting firms continue to have very high inventories of unsorted and sorted textiles. Increasingly, municipal tenders for waste textile collections are not receiving a single bid. Given the market conditions, the insolvencies and the high inventories, there is strong downward pressure on prices for original collected stock. The range of prices has also broadened.
