Hardly any changes on Germany’s WEEE market - recyclers struggle with growing fire risks

Germany’s waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) market has not altered fundamentally over the past few months. Market players report largely stable trends in arisings, revenues from recycled raw materials sales, and treatment prices. The number of fire-related incidents caused by incorrectly separated appliances containing batteries is continuing to grow; at least, that is the perception.

Expenses incurred to address fire risks during the treatment of end-of-life appliances, investments in extinguishing and fire protection systems, and – at times exorbitant – increases in insurance premiums continue to drive up costs for e-waste recyclers in Germany.

Collection volumes are described as almost stable at the low level reached in the past two years by most EUWID respondents. In a few instances, though, fluctuating and recently falling arisings are reported. Yet, other market participants see no cause for complaint because of satisfactory e-scrap tonnages in at least some regions.
