Germany’s waste wood market is "mostly calm overall" at the moment, although market players are reporting regional variations. This calm is only "mostly" the case because, as noted in the previous EUWID report published in late January, the market situation in North Rhine-Westphalia and especially in southern Lower Saxony continues to be described as "fundamentally strained".
In northern Germany, several factors are providing relief to the market, including an extended project to convert a large biomass power plant and imports, including volumes from the UK.
The lack of rainfall in many parts of Germany since the start of the year is also having an impact on fuel quality. Processors reported that they had to routinely use misting systems inside their plants to manage dust levels, something that was unusual at this time of year.
Biomass power plant operators are looking to diversify their fuel portfolio. However, the increased use of alternative fuels is coming at the cost of higher ash production, with filter ash, in particular, causing problems. Although there was not a major shortage of options for managing this waste stream, costs were rising, market participants told EUWID.
