Italy’s paper industry recently experienced a large number of market-induced and cost-related production stoppages, which meant that paper producers were consuming and buying much less recovered paper. The latest recovered paper auctions staged by the Comieco consortium took place on 7 September – at a time when demand had cooled substantially and after recovered paper prices had already fallen sharply on the free market in August. So it came as no surprise that much lower prices were bid at auction than at the last event in late May, which attracted record-high prices....
