The pressure on the German textiles reuse and recycling market remains intense, and there is little visibility and no clear direction. Market participants say there are still no signs of a recovery. Instead, the market has "ground to a halt" and "the year is already a write-off", according to one sorter operating its own collection network.
While customers are demanding ever higher quality material, the quality of incoming material continues to deteriorate and is now "at the lowest level ever", another market participant reported.
The problem of fly-tipping at collection container sites appears to be getting worse rather than better. In some cases, "you can hardly see the containers because of all the rubbish dumped there", a major collector told EUWID.
As if the crisis in the post-consumer textiles market were not challenging enough, some market participants have also encountered significant difficulties with the mandatory use of the EU’s electronic Digital Waste Shipment System (Diwass) for cross-border waste shipments.
