PET recycling: Sales volumes remain extremely weak in June

The German PET recycling market is coming under major pressure as meagre demand coincides with plentiful supply. As a result, industry players are idling plants, reducing shifts and cutting jobs. Most PET bottle recyclers in Germany are not accepting post-consumer deposit-bearing bottles unless they are contractually obligated to do so.

Sales volumes of flakes in June were even weaker than in the previous month, which led to further inventory build-up. Sluggish demand is being seen in all customer segments – from bottles and fibres to packaging strapping and films. Converters still have abundant supplies on hand or are waiting for orders from their own customers to come in, EUWID was told. Prices are no longer playing much of a role, say players. Recyclers describe the market as dysfunctional, not only in Germany but throughout the European economic region. In addition, very inexpensive bottles and flakes from other parts of Europe are being offered on the German market....
