There is such a glut of waste on the German waste-to-energy (wte) market this summer that some plants have even stopped accepting deliveries. "At the moment, nobody really knows anymore where to send commercial waste," one market participant told EUWID in July. "Waste is already piling up at recycling firms because German wte plants have very poor availability."
As incineration facilities are already full with contractually agreed volumes, the spot market for non-hazardous waste is not playing much of a role right now and most market participants were unable to quote prices for the spot market. The few quotes provided to the EUWID survey were not sufficient to be statistically significant, so the spot market has been excluded from this report.
Overall, the German energy recovery market is shaped by a variety of extraordinary circumstances. They include shifts in European cross-border waste flows following the 2023 fire at AVR's Rozenburg wte plant in the port of Rotterdam. The facility with a treatment capacity of 1.3m tonnes a year has not yet fully resumed operations.
