Price slide at year-end steeper than expected on Polish recovered paper market

Prices for many recovered paper grades continued to trend downward in Poland in the fourth quarter of 2024 – and the slide was sharper and heftier than many had been expecting.

Collection firms and traders had been hoping that price levels would stabilise at a level acceptable for all parties after the price reductions seen in late summer and autumn. But for supermarket paper and board in particular, prices dropped markedly in the final three months of 2024. The decline was mainly due to the weakening demand for packaging paper – not necessarily in Poland, where order intake was actually good in the fourth quarter, but in the wider European market.

In December, most paper mills trimmed their purchase prices. Only one major paper mill had not introduced any adjustments, and that was because this company required fibre to continue production at its Polish mill throughout the year-end holidays, EUWID was told. . .
