Prices for lower recovered paper grades continue to rise in Germany

Prices for the ordinary grades continue to rise on the German recovered paper market. Prices for the bulk grades of supermarket corrugated paper and board (1.04) and mixed paper and board (1.02) rose in March, as expected, and were now climbing more sharply in April, market participants told EUWID. In contrast, prices for graphic recovered paper grades and higher grades are said to be falling again this month.

Chief among the reasons for the renewed hikes for lower grades was the further decrease in collection volumes, market insiders told EUWID.

The amount of recovered paper available is said to have fallen sharply everywhere. On the demand side, market participants report a very heterogeneous situation. While some paper mills are producing at a low level and further machine shutdowns have been announced, other buyers are said to be looking for additional material.

That continued increase in recovered paper prices despite falling new paper prices was also the result of export sales. Although demand from the Far East has declined somewhat according to market participants and the prices offered are now largely in line with those offered on the German domestic market, significant volumes of material are still said to be flowing into the export market....
