Recovered paper prices stabilise in Germany after turbulent weeks

The recovered paper market in Germany became noticeably calmer in May. Following the hectic developments of recent months, both the enthusiasm and the anxiety have abated. Supply and demand remain low, but broadly balanced. As a result, prices for the main recovered paper and board grades have largely stabilised.

The price spikes seen in April have now been trimmed – mostly by €2-5 per tonne. Cuts were reportedly deeper for imported volumes on the spot market, reflecting the particularly sharp increases seen there earlier.

After climbing sharply in March, recovered paper prices increased even more steeply in April. Low inventory levels at paper mills and concerns over supply disruptions caused by public holidays were frequently cited as reasons.
