Steel scrap prices in Germany nearly unchanged

Steel scrap prices have barely changed on the German market in September. Steel mills that had not been fully on board with August's price increases have now caught up with their counterparts. Prices were on a good level, one merchant commented.

Sources said that scrap arisings are typically low. A few market players are even reporting a dramatic decline in availability, in particular as regards volumes of old steel scrap. Steel mills were ordering good amounts of old steel scrap on the whole in September.

However, not all merchants were able to sell all of their new steel scrap. Steel mills along the Ruhr valley have reportedly bought almost no scrap in September, resulting in surplus supply of new steel scrap. Turkish steel mills have stayed away from the German market in September despite the weak euro.
