Developments on Asian export markets once again shaped price trends on Italy’s recovered paper market in January. Asian buyers were digging deeper into their pockets for ordinary grades, so anybody needing material in Italy inevitably had to pay more, too for mixed paper and board (1.02), supermarket paper and board (1.04) and OCC (1.05). Some Italian mills which still had adequate inventories managed to avoid higher prices by refusing to buy anything at all.
The market for deinking grades was less turbulent at the start of the year, with prices stabilising amid arisings which were generally described as limited. Prices for high recovered paper grades typically stayed the same, too, amidst relatively stable demand.
