The European Commission adopted new rules on the safety of recycled plastic materials and articles intended to for food-contact on Thursday. The Brussels body explained that the Regulation would set clear rules to ensure that recycled plastic can be safely used in food packaging in the EU. The Regulation was also a necessary step to increasing recycling rates, given that around 50 per cent of all plastic packaging involved food contact.
