The European Commission has officially adopted an Implementing Decision laying down harmonised rules for calculating, verifying and reporting recycled plastic content in single-use PET beverage bottles under the Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD). The decision introduces for the first time rules for calculating chemically recycled content and repeals the existing implementing decision which only covered mechanically recycled PET.
Presented as part of the Commission's plastics package put forward last December, the new decision defines how manufacturers and member states must calculate and verify recycled content in PET beverage bottles. The methodology applies to both mechanically and chemically recycled plastics and is intended to ensure consistent implementation of the SUPD across the EU, avoid market distortions and provide greater certainty for investment in recycling technologies....
