Commission calls on eleven EU states to complete transposition of SUP Directive

The European Commission has announced legal steps against eleven member states on Thursday, calling on them to fully transpose the Single-Use Plastics (SUP) Directive in order to reduce the impact of certain plastic products on the environment and on human health. The Commission has also announced that it has closed infringement cases related to the SUP Directive against four other member states.

The SUP Directive entered into force on 3 July 2019 and the EU member states had two years to transpose the legislation into national law. However, not all EU members fully transposed the Directive by the set deadline. In January 2022, the Commission launched the first step of infringement proceedings against 16 member states by sending them letters of formal notice.
