Commission expresses concerns about Council’s position on WFD revision

The European Commission is concerned about a number of amendments that the Council of the European Union wants to make to the EU Waste Framework Directive. EU Environment Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius outlined several of these aspects during last week's meeting of the Environment Council at which member state representatives adopted a "general approach" for upcoming talks. All things considered, though, he viewed the compromise text agreed by the Council as a "good start for negotiations" with the European Parliament. The Member states aim to reach an agreement with their co-legislator on the final form of the proposed Directive before year’s end.

Mr Sinkevičius flagged items including the correction factor for the reduction targets for food waste which the Council is seeking to introduce, noting that the Commission was "very much concerned" about the feasibility of some of the proposed change....
