Commission presents roadmap for chemicals restrictions

Entire groups of chemicals that are hazardous to human health and the environment could soon be banned in the European Union. A “Restrictions Roadmap” published by the EU Commission in Brussels in late April lays out which chemicals will be prioritised in its future work in this area.

The Roadmap contains a “rolling list” of substances which will become the basis for the multiannual planning under the EU Chemicals Regulation (REACh). “The rolling list will be regularly reviewed and updated ensuring a balance between needed flexibility and commitment to ensure progress,” the Commission commented.

Thierry Breton, the EU’s Internal Market Commissioner, said the Restrictions Roadmap provides transparency and “allows companies and other stakeholders to be better prepared for potential upcoming restrictions”.
