Mario Draghi, the former president of the European Central Bank (ECB), handed over a report on the future of European competitiveness to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, at the start of last week. Mr Draghi was tasked with preparing this report around a year ago.It is one of two independent high-level reports commissioned by the EU Council and the European Commission which are expected to inform the agenda for the Commission in its new term.
At the press conference marking the release of the report, Ms von der Leyen thanked the former ECB president and noted the two fundamental principles underlying the report's recommendations: "First, the only way to ensure our long-term competitiveness is to shift away from fossil fuels and towards a clean, competitive, and circular economy. Second, our efforts on competitiveness must go hand in hand with increased prosperity for everyone in Europe."...
