The European Commission wants to accelerate the transition to a circular economy in Europe over the next five years. In addition to implementing the EU legislation adopted as part of the Green Deal, the Commission plans to build on that project with a "Clean Industrial Deal" as well as to propose a Circular Economy Act, a Bioeconomy Strategy and a package of measures for the chemical industry before the end of the current legislative term.
The circular economy plays "a central role" in the green transition towards an economy that is resource-efficient, climate-neutral but also competitive, said Karolina D’Cunha, deputy head of the circular economy unit at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Environment. Speaking at a circular economy conference put on by the German business newspaper "Handelsblatt" in Düsseldorf last week, Ms D’Cunha identified "three possible pillars" for the planned Circular Economy Act: amendments to the EU Waste Framework Directive (WFD) and the Landfill Directive, a revision of the Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and "flanking measures"....
