EU Commission takes Italy to court

|

The European Commission will take Italy to the European Court of Justice due to the inadequate pretreatment of municipal waste stored in the Malagrotta landfill near Rome and other landfills in the Lazio region. “Some 735 000 tonnes of waste escape treatment in the Rome province every year”, the EU body commented on Thursday, quoting information from the Italian authorities.

According to the Commission, the Italian government argues that the waste should be considered as treated as it is crushed before being landfilled. In contrast, the EU authority believes that this not sufficient to comply with the Landfill Directive and the Waste Framework Directive.
