EU Commission to give consumers a right to repair

The European Commission presented a new proposal for common rules to promote the repair of goods. The proposal on the "right to repair" will ensure that more products are repaired within the statutory guarantee period, the EU Commission announced on 22 March. However, there will also be exceptions to the planned rules. Specifically, it says: "Within the scope of the statutory guarantee, sellers are obliged to offer a repair service, unless it is more expensive than a replacement."

Even after  the guarantee has expired, the proposal also aims to create simpler and more cost-effective options for repairing technically repairable products such as vacuum cleaners, dishwashers and washing machines, as well as tablets and smartphones at a later date.
