EU Environment Council discussed Circular Economy Package

EU member states showed mixed reactions to the EU Commission's proposals for revising waste legislation. While welcoming the general thrust of the legislative package, many environment ministers questioned the level of ambition of the proposed new targets at the Environment Council meeting on Tuesday.

Besides calling for "realistic and achievable" targets for the reuse and recycling of waste and landfill diversion, they underlined the need to take into account the member states' particularities and differing starting positions. They also recommended to further clarify certain aspects such as definitions and the methods for calculating recycling rates.
