The European Parliament has backed a fast-tracked amendment to the Waste Shipments Regulation (WSR) that would restore exports of mixed municipal waste from the EU to Switzerland, little more than a month after a ban on such shipments entered into force. The amendment was approved during the Parliament's plenary session Thursday under the urgent procedure, which allows a text to be adopted without prior debate and on a shortened timetable.
The amendment is intended to provide a "practical solution" to a problem created by the revised WSR, which prohibited exports of mixed municipal waste for recovery to countries outside the European Economic Area (EEA) from 21 May 2026. While Switzerland participates in the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), it is not a member of the EEA and is therefore covered by the ban....
