The European Parliament has backed a fast-tracked amendment to the Waste Shipments Regulation (WSR) that would restore exports of mixed municipal waste from the EU to Switzerland, little more than a month after a ban on such shipments entered into force. The amendment was approved during the Parliament's plenary session Thursday under the urgent procedure, which allows a text to be adopted without prior debate and on a shortened timetable.
The amendment is intended to provide a "practical solution" to a problem created by the revised WSR, which prohibited exports of mixed municipal waste for recovery to countries outside the European Economic Area (EEA) from 21 May 2026.
