In 2020, the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic, on average around 127 kilograms of food per inhabitant was wasted in the EU. Private households produced 70 kg per capita, or around 55 per cent of the total, said the European statistics office Eurostat based on the first figures collected from across the EU. The volume of food waste across the 27 EU member states totalled nearly 57 million tonnes in 2020, according to Eurostat, with data from some member states estimated or missing. The figures do not include food losses, that is, food which was not harvested or which was not authorised to be marketed for safety reasons....
