European Parliament calls for landfill ban and recycling targets for textiles

The European Parliament (EP) is urging the EU and its member states to put an end to fast fashion and strengthen sustainability throughout the entire supply chain for textiles. In a resolution adopted in early June on the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles, the Parliament calls for specific targets for the prevention, collection, reuse and recycling of clothes and other textile waste. These targets should be set during the upcoming revision of the EU Waste Framework Directive (WFD). Based on its preliminary timetable, the European Commission wants to present a legislative proposal on the textiles aspects of the WFD in early July.

The resolution, which was drawn up by German MEP Delara Burkhardt as rapporteur, received widespread support. It was adopted with 600 votes in favour, 17 against and 16 abstentions.
