The proposed EU Regulation defining criteria when iron, steel and aluminium scrap cease to be waste has been adopted on Thursday and will be directly applicable in all member states after its publication in the EU official journal and a transition period of six months. Environment Commissioner Janez Potocnik commented: "We must start treating waste as a valuable resource, and the adoption today of these end-of-waste criteria for material streams will really boost our recycling industry and services. It marks another important step towards Europe's goal of becoming a resource-efficient economy and a recycling society."
