In 2022, Germany once again missed the overall recovery target of 95 per cent for end-of-life vehicles (ELVs), as set out in the EU’s ELV Directive. While the country did meet the EU’s 85 per cent target for reuse and recycling with a rate of 86.4 per cent, the overall recovery rate of 93.7 per cent was again too low. ELVs arisings in Germany were at the lowest level ever since statistical recording began in 2004, according to the annual report submitted by Germany’s Federal Environment Agency (UBA) and environment ministry to the European Commission.
As in 2019 and 2020, the explanation given for missing the 95 per cent recovery target was the relatively low intake of depolluted ELV shells at shredder plants in relation to the actual ELV arisings....
