HMRC: £276m in first year of British plastic packaging tax

The UK Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) generated tax revenues of £276m (approximately €323m) in the twelve months since it was first introduced in April 2022. The PPT receipts were reported as part of a statistics commentary recently released by HMRC (His Majesty's Revenue & Customs). Among other key figures identified by the tax authority were the number of businesses which had registered for the packaging tax scheme: 4,412 companies as of 8 August 2023.

Since 1 April 2022, manufacturers and importers of plastic packaging containing less than 30 per cent recyclate are required to pay a tax of £200/t. Only companies that produce or import at least 10 tonnes of plastic packaging annually are affected....
