The recycling rate for household waste in the UK fell from 2021 to 2022, according to a data set released by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) in late September. Of the almost 25.7 million tonnes of waste collected from British households in 2022, 11.33 million tonnes were recycled.
This represents a recycling rate of 44.1 per cent – down from 44.6 per cent in 2021. The 2022 figure was also the lowest level recorded since Defra began using its current methodology in 2015.
