India has tightened its recycled content requirements for rigid plastic packaging. An amendment to the Plastic Waste Management Rules was published in the Gazette of India on 31 March and entered into force immediately. The new rules amend India's binding minimum targets for recycled plastic content in packaging.
There was already a recycled content requirement of 30 per cent in place in 2025/26 for rigid plastic packaging (Category I) under previous legislation. This target has now been raised to 40 per cent for 2026/27. In each of the two subsequent years, the minimum share is to be increased by a further 10 percentage points, which would raise the requirement to 60 per cent in 2028/2029.
In addition to the increased targets, producers will be face additional technical requirements and reporting obligations....
