Incoming EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker announced the allocation of portfolios to the Commissioners-designate at midday on Wednesday. The Directorates-General for the Environment and for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries are to be consolidated in a single directorate to be headed up by Karmenu Vella. The 64-year-old Maltese politician served as his country's minister of tourism until his appointment to the new Commission.

The new Directorate-General for the Environment and Fisheries will no longer be responsible for food waste issues. The topic will be moved from its waste and recycling policy unit and instead be assigned to the portfolio of the Health and Consumers Directorate General.
