French "Triman" logo
France mandates that household packaging sold in its market must bear the national Triman eco-label.

The European Commission has referred France to the Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) over national labelling requirements for household packaging that it argues are incompatible with EU Single Market rules.

At the heart of the dispute is the French requirement for household products falling under extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes to bear the "Triman" logo and accompanying "Infotri" sorting instructions. The Commission contends that these labelling obligations amount to an unjustified barrier to trade and are incompatible with Articles 34-36 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU)....
