More transparency for EU consumers

As part of its new ecodesign and circular economy package, the EU Commission has tabled a proposal for updating consumer rules to take action against greenwashing and planned obsolescence. The changes are to make it easier for consumers to make informed and environmentally friendly choices when buying products.

Under the proposal, traders are to be obliged to provide consumers with information on products' guaranteed durability and reparability and, if appropriate, the availability of software updates. The "black list" of prohibited unfair commercial practices is to be extended to make sure that consumers are accurately informed about certain product characteristics, for instance features introduced to limit durability....
