EU Battery Regulation: Compromises reached on collection and recycling targets and recycled content

The negotiation teams of the EU Council and the European Parliament reached a provisional political agreement on new rules for batteries and waste batteries in trilogue talks on Friday. The agreement finalised in the fourth round of negotiations includes compromises on almost all the contentious issues sur-rounding the collection and recycling of spent batteries. The co-legislators also struck deals on mandatory incorporation of recycled material in several types of new batteries, making this the first time, according to the Council, that the entire life cycle of a battery would be covered by EU legislation.
