No full cost recovery for separate waste collection in Switzerland

The separate collection of recyclable materials from households organised by Swiss municipalites involves lower net costs than the collection and management of residual waste. However, the majority of the municipalities do not recover the full costs of separate recyclables collections in spite of financial support from anticipated waste management fees levied on glass packaging as well as aluminium and steel cans.

In Switzerland, municipal waste management costs on average CHF 129 per inhabitant and year (108 €), according to a study published by the Swiss local authority organisation Kommunale Infrastruktur / Infrastructures communales on Monday. The management of residual household waste involved the highest net cost at CHF 57 per inhabitant, while the costs of managing recyclable wastes including green wastes were significantly lower.
