Second warning for Portugal over landfill infringements

In February, the EU Commission opened infringement proceedings against Portugal, claiming the member state is allowing untreated waste to be landfilled. This week, the EU authority announced it will send the country's government a "reasoned opinion" setting a two-month deadline to respond and take the necessary measures. If Portugal fails to do so, the Commission may decide to refer the case to the Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ).

According to the European Commission, Portugal landfills at least 59 per cent of its municipal waste without any prior treatment. This breaches its obligations under the EU's Landfill Directive and the Waste Framework Directive (WFD)....
