UN plastic treaty negotiations shift to core elements after a rocky start

UN member state representatives are meeting in Paris this week to work on a global plastics treaty. Their goal is to draft a legally binding international agreement that would substantially reduce plastic pollution by 2040. As laid out in the mandate for the negotiations, the treaty is to be based on a comprehensive approach that addresses the full life cycle of plastics.

The process of achieving an agreement is politically fraught, with environmentalists, the plastics industry and oil-producing countries all pursuing different objectives.
