Five lorry loads of waste exported from Germany to the Czech municipality of Jiříkov in January were set to be returned on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Czech Environment Ministry. The town’s mayor confirmed today that the lorries had departed.
The Ministry had coordinated with authorities in Bavaria to arrange and approve the repatriation of the material. Seized at the site in January after customs officials were notified by the local mayor, the trailers were never unloaded.
The current repatriation involved only the material remaining in the lorries and not any of the other waste that was deposited at the site in Jiříkov last year, EUWID was told by the Czech Ministry of the Environment and its German counterpart for the case, the Government of Upper Palatinate (Regierung der Oberpfalz). According the news channel CT24, which is operated by Czechia's public television broadcaster, as much as 70 tonnes of waste were brought to the site. Located in the Bruntál District in north-eastern Czechia, Jiříkov has just 350 residents and lies around 100 km west of the city of Ostrava....
