EU ferrous scrap exports to third countries close to all-time record in 2023

The EU’s 27 member states exported much more ferrous scrap to countries outside the Union last year. Preliminary figures from Eurostat show that shipments of iron and steel scrap to third countries increased by 7 per cent in a year-on-year comparison to reach 18.9 million tonnes. 2021 was the only year that EU ferrous scrap exports were higher at 19.4 million tonnes. At the same time, ferrous scrap imports into the EU fell to the lowest level since the data series began in 1999.

For once, Turkey was not the main factor behind the growth in EU ferrous scrap exports last year. While the country was once again the largest destination for European exports by quite some margin as the world’s largest scrap importer, the amount shipped to Turkish consumers decreased slightly compared to 2022.
