Waste management company AVR continues to grapple with the aftermath of a major fire that swept through its waste-to-energy (wte) plant in Rozenburg near Rotterdam in late September. The Dutch company is still working with claims experts to assess the damage from the fire. However, it had become clear that it would be months before the plant could be brought back into operation, AVR said in an update issued on Wednesday. The company said it now expected to be able to restart the wte plant in October 2024.

In the immediate aftermath of the fire, AVR made arrangements to temporarily store waste at the De Spinder landfill site in Tilburg operated by Attero. AVR today said that it is seeking authorisation to continue using an interim storage approach until the end of the calendar year. Talks were underway with the Dutch environment ministry (IeW), the province of North Brabant, the province of Gelderland and other provinces and landfills in the Netherlands, explained AVR.
