German waste to energy (wte) plant operator EEW incinerated more waste and considerably increased its revenues in 2023. According to the annual report released by its Chinese parent company Beijing Enterprises Holdings Limited (BEHL) last week, EEW Energy from Waste GmbH increased the throughput at its 18 plants in Germany and neighbouring countries by 5.8 per cent to a total of 4.9 million tonnes.

Owing to the weak economy in Germany, EEW increasingly relied on waste imports to utilise capacity at its plants, according to the report. Despite the increased volumes, the group’s energy sales declined. BEHL said its subsidiary sold a total of 4.77 billion kWh of electricity, heat and process steam, representing a decline of almost 3 per cent compared to 2022.

EEW group’s revenues, on the other hand, grew considerably, rising 13.6 per cent to CNY5.8bn. Using the exchange rate on 31 December 2023, this would equate to around €737m. BEHL did not disclose a 2023 euro-denominated revenue figure for EEW in its annual report.
