Dutch waste management company Renewi has announced that Bruno Bruins is to become its Chief Strategy Officer (CSO), effective 1 May 2024. As CSO, he is to be responsible for helping to shape and deliver Renewi's strategy and for leading innovation, sustainability and relations with local, national, and European authorities, according to the company's announcement.

Mr Bruins is a member of the liberal-conservative People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and has an extensive background in local and national politics, having served as secretary of state for education, culture and science and as health minister. Mr Bruins has also worked as a member of the executive board of the public transport company Connexxion and interim managing director of The Hague's public transport system HTM, as well as serving as executive board chairman at the Employee Insurance Agency UWV.

In welcoming Mr Bruins, Renewi CEO Otto de Bont said, "His expertise and fresh perspectives on strategy, sustainability, and innovation are invaluable for our strategy and ambition to grow as a leader in recycling and producing circular materials with low CO2 emissions."

The new CSO is to oversee the prioritisation of organic and inorganic growth initiatives while helping to position Renewi with policymakers. "Both Renewi’s intended growth in Europe and, more generally, a circular economy, depend on legislation and regulations. With his experience and network in Brussels and The Hague, he will be essential in shaping Renewi’s European growth projects," said the company.
