Sharp rise in beverage cans sold in Germany

The rise in the use of beverage cans continues unabated in the Germany, according to the Beverage Can Makers Europe (BCME). The group recorded a renewed increase in the number of cans sold in Germany last year, brining the figure to 1.4 billion units.

Compared with the previous year, the 2012 BCME figure was up by nearly 25 per cent. While 2011 had marked the first time since Germany's introduction of a deposit on single use beverage containers that over a billion units were sold, the following year saw another 270 million cans added to the total. There was an increase of 21.7 per cent in the number of beer cans sold and of 26.1 per cent in the number of soda cans.
According to BCME, the growth in the sales of beverage cans in Germany was far above the European average. Altogether, 59 billion soda and beer cans were produced in 2012, which represented an increase of 3.7 per cent compared with the prior year or around 2.0 billion additional cans sold.
