Ordinary recovered paper prices expected to fall in Italy

Prices for the ordinary recovered paper grades on the Italian market remained mostly stable in May, but market observers expected another round of price reductions as early as June. There were already a few mark-downs for the higher grades this month.

Recovered paper suppliers managed to keep prices for the lower grades stable in May in most cases. Paper producers had adequate volumes in their warehouses – especially of old corrugated containers (OCC) – and supplies were sufficient. But on the other hand, suppliers reported that their own inventory levels were not particularly high and described the situation as relatively balanced. Prices for supermarket corrugated paper and board (1.04) and old corrugated containers (1.05) were therefore unchanged in May.

Only mixed paper and board (1.02) occasionally saw a few downward corrections for certain high prices compared to April. In these cases, the prices had risen slightly in the previous month despite the general downward trend and have now been trimmed again. Compared to old corrugated containers, there is still less mixed paper available on the market, but players say that demand for 1.02 has now decreased somewhat.

The full report on the Italian recovered paper market including the price table appears in issue 11/2019 of EUWID Recycling & Waste Management on 29 May 2019.
