Steel scrap prices on the rise in Germany

Ferrous scrap became more expensive in Germany in April, although mark-ups varied from grade to grade and region to region. Strong demand from steel mills was shaping the market.

Sources had mixed views about the impact of the weak euro. Some insiders felt that the exchange rate had had no effect and that prices had been boosted solely by conditions on the German market in April. Yet, others think that steel mills would not have been prepared to make price concessions of this magnitude had they not faced the risk of losing significant volumes to deep-sea export.
