The European Commission has formally launched antitrust proceedings against the Austrian waste management company Altstoff Recycling Austria (ARA) AG, the Brussels authority announced on 15 July 2011. The Commission said that it was concerned that ARA may have used its strong position on the Austrian market to hinder its competitors' from entering or expanding in the market for the management of household and commercial packaging waste. The investigation will focus on whether ARA may have hindered the access to its collection infrastructure by its competitors. In 2010, the Commission had carried out inspections at the premises of the company in Austria.
