The EU Commission is considering how best to reduce the use of plastic carrier bags, European Commissioner for Environment Janez Potocnik said. In an online consultation the Commission would like to know from the public whether it would be useful to levy a tax or introduce a fee on plastic bags, or if other options like a Europe-wide ban on plastic carrier bags would be more successful. Moreover, opinions will also be sought on increasing the visibility of biodegradable packaging products, and boosting the biodegradability requirements for packaging. The online consultation runs until August 2011.
