EU Commission takes action against Cyprus, Lithuania and Malta

|

The EU Commission announced last week that it will refer Cyprus to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for non-compliance with the Landfill Directive. The EU authority will also send second warnings to Lithuania and Malta for inadequate transposition of the Packaging Directive into national law.

The case against Cyprus relates to six landfills taking in wastes from the cities of Limassol and Nicosia which are operating in violation of EU regulations. The country’s government does not expect to achieve full compliance with EU standards before 2015, the Commission reported. The warnings for Lithuania and Malta relate to aspects of national packaging legislation, such as the packaging definition in the case of Malta, which are not in line with the EU Packaging Directive.
